Maybe your job isn’t quite right. Or, perhaps it’s all wrong. You know you should look for something else, but you’re not sure where to start. Use these five steps to stick to your New Year’s resolution and find that new job.
Brush Off Your Resume
Even if you’re applying for a warehouse or a light industrial position, a well-written resume can improve your chances of landing a job. What if you don’t have a resume? Search for an online template and use these tips to create a resume hiring managers will notice.
Sign Up for Job Alerts
You are busy. And, looking for a new job is just one more thing on your to-do list. Make the process easier by setting up alerts. Most job boards offer this feature. , create an account, and go to preferences. Usually, you can specify location, job title, and keywords. Then, sit back and wait. Jobs meeting your qualifications will automatically show up in your email or text messages. It’s like having your own job search assistant.
Call a Local Staffing Service
A staffing firm can take your job search to the next level. Recruiters will review your application materials, offer advice, and match you to best-fit opportunities. Plus, since staffing services charge companies, not job seekers, you can take advantage of all these benefits for free.
Set Clear Goals with Deadlines
On January 1st, you are excited, enthusiastic, and ready to launch that job hunt. But, by January 15th, you’ve decided maybe your current position isn’t so bad. Is this true, or did you give up too soon? Keep yourself motivated by breaking “Get a new job this year” into smaller, more manageable parts. For example, 1) Rewrite my resume by Jan. 6th, 2) Ask two people to proofread my resume by Jan. 10th, 3) Set up job alerts by Jan. 17th, 4) Call and meet with two employment agencies by Jan. 24th, 5) Send out three applications by Jan. 31st. Since these micro-goals are more specific and less overwhelming, you’ll have a better chance of staying focused.
Track Your Progress and Re-evaluate as Needed
Write down your micro-goals and put them somewhere; you will see them every day. This could be a whiteboard on your refrigerator or the background screen on your phone. Cross off items you finish and circle those you miss. Every two to four weeks, revisit your priorities. For example, if you sent out three applications and received zero response, consider reworking your resume. But if you sent out three applications and received two callbacks, switch over to interview prep.
