You landed an interview. That’s fantastic news. Now, you can sit back and relax. Wait a minute. Not so fast. To make a great first impression, you need to do your homework. Here’s why you need to research the company before you interview.
You Want to Look Like a Knowledgeable Candidate
If you haven’t taken the time to learn about an organization, it will become evident at some point during the interview. And this is going to make you look bad. After all, businesses want people to love them. If you aren’t enthusiastic during the hiring process, your future as an employee doesn’t look bright. Display your interest in the job by finding out as much as possible about the company. Read their website, search for recent press releases, check out online reviews, and follow their social media channels. The more information you have, the more likely you’ll be able to engage with the interviewer intelligently.
You Need to Show Why You Would Be a Great Fit
Chances are the hiring manager who pulled your resume because it matched the job description. Similarly, in the interview, you’ll want to prove you are the best–fit candidate. During your research, look for clues to help you craft answers to make the interviewer think, “Wow! This is the person we should hire.” For example, let’s say the interviewer asks, “What are your greatest strengths?” Rather than mentioning any old strengths, highlight two to three of your top skills that relate directly back to the role or the company.
You’ll Be in A Better Position to Ask Questions
Usually, hiring managers wrap up an interview by saying, “Do you have any questions for me?” This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about the organization and to leave a positive impression on the interviewing committee. Before the big day, write down things you would like to know. Of course, don’t ask questions you could easily answer on your own, such as, “How long have you been in business?” Then, mentally refer to this list so you can ask about areas not covered in the interview.
You Don’t Want to Take the Wrong Job
In the excitement of receiving a callback, you might assume you would accept any offer. Be careful. Not every job will be right for you. Many people forget interviewers are not only about hiring managers finding the right candidates, but also about candidates finding the right positions. Doing your homework allows you to uncover red flags before you discover yourself stuck in the wrong place.
