E&S Underwriter – Direct Hire Opportunity
Location: Montvale, NJ (Bergen County)
Salary: $80,000–$95,000 Annually

Position Overview
United Talent Staffing is seeking an experienced Excess & Surplus (E&S) Underwriter for a direct-hire opportunity in Montvale, New Jersey.
This is an excellent opportunity for an insurance professional who enjoys evaluating commercial risks, making underwriting decisions, and building strong relationships with agents and brokers.
The ideal candidate will have a solid background in commercial insurance underwriting, with experience in wholesale E&S, surplus lines, or managing general agency (MGA) environments. Experience underwriting trucking, transportation, or specialty commercial risks is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
  • Review insurance applications, loss histories, loss-control reports, and supporting documentation to evaluate risks.
  • Assess commercial exposures, including catastrophe risks, loss frequency, and severity.
  • Evaluate new business and renewal submissions to determine eligibility within established underwriting guidelines.
  • Calculate or verify policy pricing and prepare competitive insurance quotes.
  • Identify risks that fall outside established underwriting guidelines and escalate when appropriate.
  • Review policy renewals, endorsements, and cancellations.
  • Request additional underwriting documentation and respond to agent and broker inquiries.
  • Collaborate with insurance agents, brokers, and carrier partners throughout the underwriting and placement process.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting records and account information.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with agency partners through regular communication and marketing visits.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions align with company programs, guidelines, and assigned authority.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of insurance industry experience.
  • Active insurance producer's license.
  • Previous underwriting experience with a strong understanding of commercial coverage forms, exposures, and underwriting practices.
  • Ability to independently review submissions, evaluate risks, and determine eligibility.
  • Experience with risk selection, insurance rating, pricing, and quote preparation.
  • Understanding of underwriting authority and established program guidelines.
  • Experience working directly with insurance agents and brokers.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule associated with the Montvale, NJ office.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Wholesale Excess & Surplus (E&S) or surplus-lines underwriting experience.
  • Experience working within an MGA or wholesale insurance environment.
  • Auto Physical Damage (APD) underwriting experience.
  • Motor Truck Cargo (MTC) underwriting experience.
  • Experience evaluating and pricing trucking or transportation risks.
  • Commercial auto or specialty commercial insurance underwriting experience.
Compensation & Benefits
